On Friday 19 October, at 7.10am on the SABC 2 Morning Live Show, the official nominees were announced for the 13th annual SA Sports Awards.
The Surfer Kids, a Mossel Bay based NPO, were nominated in the category ‘Recreation Body of the Year’.
The Surfer Kids NPO was nominated by the General Manager of Surfing South Africa, Robin de Kock, in recognition of the growth and success achieved by the organisation since its inception in 2010.
The final nominees were selected by the SA Sports Awards’ panel of adjudicators, comprising some of the country's leading sports writers and sportscasters, tasked with selecting the top three nominees from a long list of nominations received from the various sporting federations in South Africa.
Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) together with the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) embarked on the creation of the South African Sports Awards in 2004. Through the South African Sports Awards (SASA) the Department aims to applaud individual athletes, teams and administrators who continue to display exceptional performance and attain remarkable results.
The awards recognise a range of different categories including individual male and female sportsmen and women; sportsmen and women with disabilities; national sporting federations; recreation bodies; schools; indigenous games; sporting legends and members of the sports media.
The final winners were announced at a ceremony held at PACOFS, Mangaung (Bloemfontein) Free State, on November 11.

Although The Surfer Kids did not win their category (the award went to a much larger organization) the recognition received goes a long way toward validating The Surfer Kids' efforts and success achieved over the last 8 years.
The Surfer Kids is a youth empowerment and social development organisation, established in 2010 and based permanently at Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay, with the objective to “empower marginalised youth through surfing.”
The Surfer Kids’ operates within some of the poorest communities in Mossel Bay and uses surfing a medium through which commitment and dedication is taught as a means toward personal empowerment.
